Learn your way around Nim

Make Nim your next activity in the game library. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Bring this focus to a round

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Aim for this result

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

The order of play

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

One way to understand the rules

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

A mistake to avoid

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
